The 128th anniversary of the victory of Adwa is being celebrated with various events across Ethiopia.

The anniversary is particularly celebrated in the capital Addis Ababa colorfully at the newly built Adwa Victory Memorial with military parade, artistic events and other programs.

The Adwa victory refers to the Battle of Adwa, a significant military confrontation between Ethiopia and Italy that took place on 1st March 1896.

The battle had resulted in a decisive victory for Ethiopia and is considered a historic event and a symbol of African resistance against European colonialism, it was indicated.

This year, necessary preparations have been made to celebrate the Adwa victory commemoration, which is mainly coordinated by the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) with a great national movement.

The anniversary is also being celebrated in all regional states, city administrations, institutions, embassies and consulates all over the world.

This year, we are commemorating this momentous occasion in a manner befitting its significance, the mayor said.

‘We gather at the Adwa Victory Memorial, a place that embodies the grandeur and the spirit of our forebears’ triumph against colonial aggression.’

Adanech recalled that the Victory of Adwa reminds us of the time when Ethiopians, setting aside their differences, marched together in unison to defend the sovereignty of our beloved nation.

‘Our ancestors made immense sacrifices, united by a common goal and a shared belief in the sanctity of our land and the dignity of our people,’ she added.

The major elaborated this victory is etched in history with indelible ink, symbolizing unity, respect, heroism, and resilience she said, adding it is a victory that belongs to all Ethiopians, a shared heritage that we proudly celebrate together.

‘As we commemorate this victory, we are also reminded of the promise it holds for our generation and the generations to come,’ she underlined.

The Victory of Adwa also demonstrates the unity and commitment to uphold the values of freedom and sovereignty that our forefathers fought for.

Today Ethiopians are celebrating the 128th anniversary of the decisive victory that thwarted the Italian campaign to expand its colonial empire.

In his remark, Field Marshal Birhanu stressed the need for this generation to maintain the unity and solidarity shown by their forefathers in various ways.

The Victory of Adwa spread the light of hope for freedom and liberation to all Africans under colonization, he noted.

It encouraged the black people to pursue their struggle for freedom, Field Marshal Birhanu added.

According to him, Ethiopia has been a prominent advocate for freedom of black people and remains a staunch supporter of Pan-Africanism.

The commemoration of the Victory of Adwa is a proudest moment of Ethiopian history that should be imparted to the upcoming generations, Sri Lanka Ambassador Theshantha Kumarasiri said.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, the Sri Lanka Ambassador to Ethiopia said history reflects what your forefathers did for your country.

The Victory of Adwa is a history, but it should be transformed into positive energy towards the economic development of the country, he added.

With the vast experience in Africa, something you transmit is this victory to a positive direction towards economic development.

The ambassador does not believe that any Ethiopian hates Italy. ‘You have gained much from Italy and also still collaborate with Italy, Italian Government, Europe and European Union and all.’

Adwa Victory Day Celebrated in Qatar, Djibouti


Ethiopian communities in Qatar and Djibouti have colorfully celebrated the 128th Adwa Victory Day, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In her opening speech to the celebration in Doha, the guest of honor and Foreign Affairs State Minister Birtukan Ayano said the day symbolizes Ethiopia’s unity and served as inspiration for all Africans during their struggle against colonialism.

According to her, celebrating the victory in foreign lands opens doors to promote the proud history and good image of Ethiopia.

The state minster also affirmed the commitment of the Government of Ethiopia to continue protecting the rights and dignity of Ethiopians who live abroad, in line with its Citizen-centered Foreign Policy.

Also in Djibouti, community members and esteemed government officials commemorated the 128th commemoration of Victory of Adwa today.

Views of Diplomats on Significance of Victory of Adwa


Diplomats, who attended the 128th Commemoration of Victory of Adwa at the newly unveiled Adwa memorial museum today, have noted the symbolic event’s enduring significance in proving that black people can be independent and maintain their national sovereignty.

Speaking to ENA, Armenia Ambassador Sahak Sargsyan noted that ‘the Ethiopian people are very proud of this victory which was also a victory for the African continent, all African nations.’

He also shared the lesser-known contribution of Armenians in the fight against the colonizers.

Armenians had taken part in the fight against the occupiers, the ambassador stated, adding that “it was a small contribution by Armenians, the Ethiopian-Armenians as well to this victory.’

Zambia Political and Administration Counselor, Nowa Sibonjo emphasized the victory’s role as a symbol of unity for the African continent.

‘The Adwa victory is a big landmark for the African continent. It also exemplifies the unity,’ he said.

The counselor stressed the importance of le
arning from the past and emphasized the need for continued African unity to overcome contemporary challenges.

‘So we need to start looking at the unity. Our Pan-Africanism is not just a thing of now or of yesterday. This is something for the future. We can build ourselves if we get more united.’

Bangladesh Defense Attache, Brigadier General Shariful Islam commended Ethiopia’s unique position as a nation that remained uncolonized.

‘Adwa victory is a very important event in the history of Ethiopia. This was the day when Ethiopians stood against the colonial power, and they proved their efficiency. They could stand alone as an independent nation, and they were never subjugated by the colonial powers.”

According to Brigadier General Islam, the victory is a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of Ethiopians and a significant event in the history of black people worldwide.

‘Adwa victory is not only for the Ethiopian people, but also a victory for the black people because the black people can remain sovereign
throughout like Ethiopia. Ethiopia was one of the unique examples in the world that remained sovereign throughout history because of the bravery and the sacrifice of your forefathers and foremothers. So, I have all the respect for them.’

Today, Ethiopians across the nation commemorated the 128th anniversary of Victory of Adwa with the central celebration taking place at the newly unveiled Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in the heart of the capital city.
