Geingob groomed youth ready to take over: Nekongo

WINDHOEK: Swapo Party Youth League Secretary General, Ephraim Nekongo said the late President Hage Geingob was one of the leaders who groomed young people who are ready to take over the country.

Shortly after paying condolences to former First Lady Monica Geingos at the couple’s residence here on Friday, Nekongo said Geingob groomed many young people ready to take over as the country moves forward.

Geingob passed away at the age of 82, on 04 February.

Nekongo emphasized that the recent appointment of former Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Technology (MICT), Emma Theofelus to Minister, honours Geingob for his role in shaping young people.

Theofelus marks the youngest minister at age 27 in the country following the appointment by President Nangolo Mbumba on Friday during a cabinet reshuffle necessitated by Geingob’s death.

Geingob appointed Theofelus as deputy minister of MICT in March 2020 as part of his second term cabinet.

‘As we move forward, definitely the grooming we have to put it
into practice because we know already what to do as the good teacher already taught us,’ he said.

The youth leader said that the late Geingob championed a constitution that lived up to the expectations of the country and its people, challenged the missing provision in the constitution and amended it to the expectations of the Namibian people.

‘Had those missing amendments not been effected we could have had a crisis in terms of transition. If you recall, many people were not happy during that period, however, we could only say thanks to the people’s President for ensuring that effectiveness,’ he noted.

2023 AFCON final: African coach to conquer again?

By Muluh Alfred

The past two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations have been won by African coaches, a pattern which still has a possibility to continue in the 2023 AFCON.

As much as the Super Eagles led by Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro are considered favourites of the final against Ivory Coast, a win by the hosts will maintain the trend.

Since Belgian tactician Hugo Broos lifted the trophy with Cameroon in 2017, only coaches of African origin have emerged champions over the past two editions.

Djamel Belmadi won with Algeria in 2019, while Aliou Cisse gave Senegal their first title in 2021.

A total of 24 coaches participated in the AFCON 2023, with 13 out of the total being of African origin while the rest were foreign coaches.

Surprisingly, of the 13 African coaches who led their teams in the AFCON, 10 of them made it to the round of 16 including coaches from Morocco, Cameroon, and Egypt, Sénégal while six teams led by foreign coaches made it to the round of 16.

As the competition progressed to the q
uarter-finals the numbers evened out, Six home-based coaches and two foreign coaches were eliminated, leaving four of each group going into the quarter-finals.

In the semi-finals, only one home-based coach, the coach of Ivory Coast, qualified. In contrast, three foreign coaches led their teams to the semi-finals, including the head coaches of Nigeria, South Africa, and DR Congo.

Now, as the tournament comes closer to crowning a champion, the exciting final of the AFCON will be contested between coach Jose Peseiro of Nigeria, a foreign coach, and coach Emerse Fae a home based coach who took over Ivory Coast after the group stage.

This tense battle between two respected coaches from distinct backgrounds will add another layer of excitement to the already thrilling tournament as the final match determines this year’s champions of Africa.

Adwa Victory Memorial Museum Will Engrave Victory in Hearts and Conscience of Africans

Addis Ababa: The Adwa Victory Memorial Museum will contribute to perpetuating the memory of Adwa and engraving in the hearts and conscience of Africans, African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) Director-General Ibrahim Shaddad told ENA.

He noted that “the Ethiopian government built the museum so that it remains in the conscience of all Africans because Adwa is not a battle in a specific region, in Ethiopia, but rather the battle of all Africans for liberation.”

It was a source of inspiration and encouragement for all African countries and their peoples to liberate themselves from European settler colonialism, he added.

“Therefore, Ethiopia is present in the hearts of all Africans as a symbol of independence. (And) that is why it became the headquarters of African liberation.”

Shaddad explained that the battle had brought together all Ethiopian nationalities. ‘Menelik II, with his military forces from all Ethiopian nationalities, was able to defeat them (the colonialists) overwhelmingly in the Battle
of Adwa, in which all Ethiopian nationalities participated.’

The director-general further emphasized the role of the Battle of Adwa in making Ethiopia a political destination and a destination for liberation.

“Ethiopia’s overwhelming victory in the Battle of Adwa against the Italian invasion made all Africans consider Ethiopia a political destination and a destination for liberation. Therefore, the African people decided to make Addis Ababa their capital and to be a platform for unity, which developed and became the African Union.”

As a result, most heads of state flock to Addis Ababa and have made Addis Ababa a stronghold for African diplomacy. The Organization of African Unity was formed and is still in Addis Ababa to continue economic and political liberalization and achieve food security for all African countries.

Shaddad also recalled the pioneering role Ethiopia played in supporting the liberation movements in Africa.

“Ethiopia helped liberation movements in Africa through various political and mil
itary means, training and weapons. Therefore, all Africans have the greatest affection and gratitude towards Ethiopia for its help in liberating their countries from European colonialism, to the point that many African countries adopted the Ethiopian flag.”

Moreover, he praised the efforts made by Ethiopia to achieve political stability in most of the countries of the continent.

Considering its better position in economic and social development as well as security, it can also contribute to economic, all political and security of Africa, the director-general noted.

Shaddad thanked the Ethiopian government, people, and institutions for what they are doing for the African continent, stressing the need to complete political and economic liberation and food security for all African people.
