AFCON2023: I know we will qualify for the second round – Coach Rigobert song

By Muluh Alfred

Despite Cameroon’s 3-1 loss to Sénégal in their second group match of the AFCON, the head coach of the indomitable Lions remains steadfast in Cameroon’s qualification.

During a post-match press conference, he stated ‘I am always optimistic. As long as there is a final match, there are no calculations to make. The next match will be a final for us and I know that we will qualify for the second round.’

Assuming full responsibility for the defeat against Sénégal, the head coach added ‘When there is a defeat, we must bear responsibility and therefore we must admit that Senegal was better than us in the match.’

Coach Song noted that the young players in the team would need more experience to produce better results on such occasions. ‘Senegal was stronger than us, their players were in their places on the field, They deserved their victory. For our part, we have young players in the national team, and they are at the beginning of their experience.’

In his view, the players did everything they
could during the game, but small details made the difference. ‘We admit that the competitor was better than us,’ he explained.

Cameroon drew their first game against Guinea and heads into the third game with just one point after their loss to Senegal.

AFCON 2023: Senegal vs Cameroon preview

Cameroon’s senior men’s national team searches for their first win at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against defending champions, Senegal on Friday.

Holders, Teranga Lions began their title defense with a comfortable 3-0 win over ten-man Gambia.

This came after favorites like Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana failed to deliver wins in round one.

The win extended the 2021 champions’ unbeaten run in the competition to eight matches (six wins and two draws).

They next face the Indomitable Lions, a team that knocked them out of the cup in 2017.

Anything less than a victory for Rigobert Song’s side will see them in a dicey situation to qualify for the Round of 16.

Early exit seemed unlikely as the Central African side have progressed from ten of their last 11 AFCON group stages.

Key to this quest is the return of Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana who has joined the team after featuring for the Red Devils over the weekend.

It will be a game Cameroon will have to be up and doing after faili
ng to keep a clean sheet in their last three games.

Lamine Camara scored two goals when Senegal beat Gambia 3-0 and is expected to play a crucial role for his team.

Trying to outdo Camara will be the Lions’ lone goal scorer Frank Magri who also scored for his club Toulouse in a 3-0 victory over Camara’s Metz in the French Ligue 1 this season.

It promises to be a star match of the day as far as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is concerned on Friday, the same manner as the Cote D’Ivoire vs Nigeria clash was highly anticipated on Thursday.
