RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 29, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In a historic achievement, the Organ Transplant Center of Excellence (OTCoE) team at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) has successfully performed the world’s first fully robotic living donor liver transplant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia—a move that solidifies KFSH&RC’s position as a global leader in minimally invasive transplant surgery.

KFSH&RC’s pioneering approach employed state-of-the-art robotic technology to conduct both donor and recipient surgeries with precision and minimal invasiveness, eliminating the need for a hybrid approach. While other centres offer minimally invasive liver transplants using mixed techniques, KFSH&RC is the only centre to complete a fully robotic living donor liver transplant surgery successfully.

This accomplishment represents a significant leap forward in the history of transplantation, a testament to the centre’s commitment to advanced practices that enhance healthcare outcomes, improve the patient experience, and boost hospital operational efficiency. It has also led to a reduction in the risk of complications, recovery time, and the length of hospital stays.

Leadership is an important aspect of human activity

Mr. Abraham Lincoln Owusu, Chief Executive Officer and Lead OD Consultant, Africa Institute of Organisational Development, has singled out leadership as an important aspect of all human activity. He said this was because leaders played key roles in shaping, directing and solving problems in the society. Mr. Owusu said this when he delivered a talk on the topic ‘leading through change’ at a two day capacity building workshop organised for Project Pastors, Frontline Church Partnership Chairpersons and Child Development Workers in the Adaklu /Agotime Cluster of Child Development Centres. The workshop, which was attended by about 80 participants, was sponsored by Compassion International Ghana, a Christian Child Development organization that releases children from poverty. Mr. Owusu entreated those who found themselves in leadership positions to mirror the behaviour they expected from their followers. ‘A leader must have positive influence on his or her followers,’ he said. He told the participants that as leaders of their various Centres, they should have a vision and a purpose, adding ‘work hard with your followers to translate your vision into reality.’ ‘You should always create and articulate a clear vision, a vision that must bring growth and progress,’ he advised. Mr. Owusu also advised them to always focus on the positive outcome of their works and not be anxious about the credit they would take. He urged them to be humble, compassionate, understanding and accessible in order for them to win the confidence and respect of the people they lead. Mrs. Emily Adevor, Partnership Facilitator of the Adaklu/Agotime Cluster, encouraged the participants not to relent on their efforts in putting what they learnt at the workshop into practice for the positive transformation of their Centres. She urged them to train the children into God fearing leaders of tomorrow.

Mr Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman, is exploring various avenues to mobilise support for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage in his constituency. His efforts are yielding results as relief items keep pouring in from well-wishers to meet the challenges of the people. One of such philanthropists, Mr Horthman Ansah, the Chief Executive Officer of Asuogyaman Company Limited, dealers in wood products, has donated items worth GHS100,000 to Mr Ampem for distribution to the victims. The items: rice, tomato sauce, sardines, cooking oil, mackerel, and drinking water, will be distributed to affected persons at Abume, Kokontekpedzi, Labolabo, Small London, Kudikope, Dzidzorkope, and adjoining communities. Mr Ansah, in a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency on Saturday, said the donation was to alleviate the plight of the people and ensure they came out of the precarious situation soon. The MP expressed profound gratitude to the Company for the swift response to his plea, which would go a long way to give the victims some comfort. He said other companies had also agreed to support, however he appealed to non-governmental organisations and individuals to assist. Mr Ampem advised persons capitalising on the vulnerability of the constituents to score political points to desist from the act and rather channel their energies to ‘rescue the perishing and care for the dying.’ Approximately 50 residences have submerged with enormous damage caused to fish farming on the Volta Lake within the constituency. ‘Prior to receiving the relief items, the MP has made several donations and cash presentations to victims in the constituency and beyond,’ the statement said.

Businessman outdoored Chief of Salo

The elders and people of Salo in the Anlo Traditional Area have outdoored a businessman as the newly installed Togbi Agbelorm Agbotokor II. His outdooring happened about two weeks after he was captured, confined and taken through the rites of passage in accordance with the chieftaincy customs and traditions of Anlo to succeed his predecessor who passed or as traditionally put ‘journeyed home’ decades ago. He was outdoored along with his Chief Linguist, Agbotadua Dzreke and Mama Amedzor Agbotokor II, Queen of Salo. Togbi Agbotokor, speaking to Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a solemn ceremony to outdoor them from confinement, said he was prepared to harness all available resources towards the socio-economic transformation of the area. The Founder and Executive Chairman of Nana Asamani Foundation, a non-governmental organisation with focus on providing the less-privileged with sustainable livelihood support programmes, said he would direct his empowerment programmes at the youth, especially to curtail the drift in the area occasioned by lack of employment opportunities. ‘I am always for development to empower the youth. Our people leave behind the youth who are the future but that will not happen in my reign …’ Mama Agbotokor, an educationist and technology expert, said she would prioritise investment in the education of the younger generation to make them acceptable internationally. She indicated she was open to suggestions in improving the lot of the indigenes, especially the aged saying, there was the need to do something about the poverty level in the community. Agbotadua Dzreke assured of working together with the Chief, the Queen and other community leaders so Salo could see the development projects, including health and education facilities. Mr Christian Dugah, Kingmaker of Salo, said the new chief had good plans for the community and would in consultation with other community leaders consider ways of bringing jobs and pooling resources to develop the area. Some indigenes, who spoke to GNA, said they expected the reign to usher in a new dawn for Salo so they could be proud to call the community noted for mangroves, their home. Togbi Agbotokor is also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Rainbee Group of Companies and the Ghana, Togo and Benin representative of the Committee of Ewes Association of North America (CEANA).

Etotha Carnival gets N.dollar 1.5 million boost

ONDANGWA: The Etotha Carnival received a financial boost of over N.dollars 1.5 million during the launch and fundraising event held in Ondangwa on Saturday.

The Ondonga Traditional Authority, as the main sponsor, pledged N.dollar 500,000 for the hosting of the carnival.

Speaking during the launch and fundraising, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, said the ministry, in collaboration with the Ondonga Traditional Authority (OTA), has agreed to establish an annual festival called the Etotha Carnival in the area of the salt pans under the OTA’s jurisdiction. Shifeta stated that this is aimed at improving the livelihood of the local communities, reviving and preserving the heritage of the communities, fostering sustainable tourism development, and enhancing conservation of biological diversity while fostering social cohesion among the communities from all corners of Namibia.

‘Etotha Carnival, therefore, seeks to harmonise these two forces, using tourism as a bridge to explore and appreciate the diverse cultures and heritage that make our country so extraordinary,’ he said. He indicated that the Ekangonde Salt Pans celebrations, as an important heritage site, bring people together to celebrate the critical role they play in supporting and shaping the traditional lifestyles of our communities.

Through this event, Shifeta said they plan to improve the livelihoods of the communities in the Onanke area and the region at large by promoting domestic tourism and spreading the benefits thereof.

Moreover, Shifeta highlighted that in 2022, they recorded a total of 461,027 tourists having arrived at the end of 2022, growing by a record increase of 98.1% from 232,756 in 2021. ‘These numbers indicate a good sign of recovery in the travel and tourism sector and provide hope for all in the sector,’ he said.

He further stated that in 2015, using the broader economy concept that includes indirect effects and makes allowances for investment spending in support of tourism activities, the total travel and tourism contribution to the GDP was N.dollars 15.1 billion, representing 10.2% of the overall GDP and 100,700 jobs, which is 14.5% of total employment.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Ondonga Traditional Authority, Fillemon Shuumba Nangolo, stated that the salt pan, which has culturally been off-limits to women, will be allowed to accommodate all genders. Nangolo explained that the salt pan has been used as a place to initiate young boys into men. However, their ancestors have given permission to allow women to also visit the salt pan during the carnival. The Etotha Carnival is scheduled to take place in July next year in the Oshikoto Region.
