Government to Build 12 Modern Markets in Baringo to Boost Small Scale Traders

Marigat: The National government has announced plans to construct 12 modern markets across Baringo County aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of small scale traders. Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki revealed this development during an economic empowerment event at Marigat Boys High School grounds for Baringo South Constituency.

According to Kenya News Agency, the markets will be strategically established in major towns and trading centers including Kabarnet, Marigat, Mogotio, Eldama Ravine, Chemolingot, Kabartonjo, Tenges, and Barbelo. The Marigat market is set to become one of the largest in the county, with an estimated cost of Sh350 million, aligning with the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The Deputy President, joined by Cabinet Secretary for Gender Hanna Cheptumo and other leaders, highlighted that the planned market structure would feature wholesale and retail spaces, a daycare center, an ICT hub, among other facilities. He urged local farmers to expand their agricultural ventures to fully utilize the new markets for economic growth.

Prof. Kindiki emphasized the government's commitment to improving conditions for small scale traders, particularly vegetable vendors and hawkers. He also noted the administration's efforts in food security, highlighting the subsidy on fertilizer prices from Sh7,000 to Sh2,500 over the past two and a half years, which has bolstered local food production and reduced the need for maize and other commodity imports.

Baringo Central Constituency Member of Parliament Joshua Kandie, present at the event, encouraged farmers to engage in cash crop farming and collaborate with government agencies to enhance agricultural practices. Kandie remarked on the region's significant agricultural potential, urging residents to capitalize on it and contribute to national food security.
