Eritrea: Efforts to Enhance Capacity of Education Sector

Asmara: Dr. Halima Mohammed, Minister of Education, highlighted the commitment to improving the capacity and expanding the provision of educational services in Eritrea. Dr. Halima made these remarks during a meeting held from 24 to 26 August to assess the implementation of activities by regional education offices for the 2025/2026 academic year. According to African Press Organization, the meeting took place at the Ministry of Education headquarters and was attended by Ambassador Abdella Musa, Minister of Local Government. Dr. Halima emphasized that the main aim of the meeting was to thoroughly review the accomplishments and challenges encountered in all six regions of the country and at Warsai-Yikealo Secondary School in Sawa. Dr. Halima noted that the successful delivery of educational services across Eritrea hinges on the active participation of partner institutions and regional administrations. She stated that efforts are underway to expand educational services from preschool through secondary school bo th qualitatively and quantitatively and encouraged participants to propose constructive ideas to support this initiative. Reports were presented by the heads of regional education offices, focusing on capacity enhancement in the education sector, ensuring preschool education access for all children, capacity-building training for both veteran and newly recruited teachers, and supervisory activities conducted. Participants engaged in extensive discussions on the reports and adopted recommendations, such as providing preschool education in the mother tongue, strengthening capacity-building training for teachers, and establishing laboratory facilities. Ambassador Abdella Musa urged teachers to contribute actively to improving education quality and called on parents to enhance their involvement in the teaching and learning process.
