Makueni: The County Government of Makueni has awarded scholarships to 81 students pursuing studies in various courses in universities spread across the country. Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr stated that the beneficiaries were bright but needy students from less privileged backgrounds whose secondary education was also sponsored by the county government.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Kilonzo expressed satisfaction that the students had completed their secondary education with the county's support and had been accepted into university programs. He highlighted the potential for these students to secure jobs or become self-employed in fields such as clinical medicine, electrical engineering, medicine and surgery, and civil engineering. The governor reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the students in their educational pursuits.
The governor also urged the students to prioritize their studies and attend all lessons to excel in their academic endeavors. He reminded them of the requirement to submit their academic results annually, with the Department of ICT, Education, and Internship monitoring their progress.
During the event, 12 students who scored an A were rewarded with briefcases by the county government. Governor Kilonzo also addressed the recent reduction in university fees, urging the Cabinet Secretary for Ministry Education, Migos Ogamba, to eliminate conditions that negatively impact students' education.
He advised the ministry to establish clear policies that allow students to pursue education without hindrances. The governor emphasized the need for consistency in the education sector to avoid annual changes that could disrupt students' progress.
The event was attended by several officials, including County Executive Committee Member for the department of ICT, Education and Internship Japheth Mang'oka, Chief Officer Irene Makau, Machakos Boys High School Chief Principal Benson Manoo, and other government representatives.
