AIChE Appoints Darlene S. Schuster as New CEO and Executive Director

New York, NY, April 07, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Board of Directors of AIChE®, the Global Home of Chemical Engineers, announced today that Darlene S. Schuster, PhD, AIChE’s current Chief of Technical Operations, Membership, and Business Development, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Institute. An experienced business leader, Dr. Schuster will become CEO and Executive Director effective April 25. She will succeed June C. Wispelwey, who is retiring on April 22.

Later, as a Bucknell University Clare Booth Luce Chair and Professor of Chemical Engineering, she was one of 50 inaugural female science and engineering faculty who worked to promote women’s entry into the study and teaching of engineering and science. Schuster is also an entrepreneur, and founded a consulting and distribution company specializing in medtech and biotech industry sectors. Over the past twenty years, Schuster has served AIChE as a volunteer, consultant, and employee — most recently leading AIChE’s publications, membership, meetings, business development, education, and technical entities as Chief of Technical Operations.

New Gavi Risk Sharing Partnership with MedAccess and the Open Society Foundations to help meet country demand for COVID-19 vaccines

  • Gavi, MedAccess, and the Open Society Foundations announce a new partnership to create an innovative Risk Sharing Facility to support the COVAX Cost-Sharing Mechanism.
  • The partnership aims to build on intensive efforts by Gavi to extend its suite of innovative financing instruments to help donors and countries stretch their available resources as the pandemic shifts and to protect against future shocks. The Facility’s instruments also represent a pathway and toolkit to address future global health crises.

April 8 will see Germany co-host the 2022 Gavi COVAX AMC Summit, where governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector will come together to renew their commitment to global vaccination.

MedAccess, the Open Society Foundations, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance today announced a new partnership to create a Risk Sharing Facility to help countries procure additional COVID-19 vaccine doses, including variant-adapted doses in response to risks and shocks. The $200 million facility is designed to enable countries to protect more of their people and support COVAX’s ambitions to make COVID vaccine procurement more sustainable and more tailored to country needs.

The Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment (Gavi COVAX AMC) provides COVID-19 vaccines free of charge for 92 of the world’s lowest-income countries, helping them to meet the objectives set out in their national vaccination strategies—with more than 1.2 billion doses already shipped to AMC countries. In addition, AMC countries can also use the COVAX Cost-Sharing Mechanism to order more doses using domestic resources or low-cost financing from their multilateral development bank (MDB) partners, enabling them to protect more people, more quickly.

The new guarantees are aimed at increasing take-up of the Cost-Sharing Mechanism by facilitating the financing of orders. MedAccess will provide a $100 million procurement guarantee to enable COVAX to order more doses from manufacturers on behalf of AMC countries choosing to participate in cost-sharing. By purchasing through COVAX, countries benefit from lower prices per dose negotiated for a range of COVID-19 vaccines.

The Open Society Foundations will provide a further procurement guarantee of up to $100 million alongside MedAccess, through the Soros Economic Development Fund. This will help COVAX to respond to country requests for additional doses in the event of a future shock or demand spike.

The COVAX Cost-Sharing Mechanism was launched in partnership between Gavi, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank in July 2021. Since then, the European Investment Bank has also joined and committed €300 million in financing for countries wishing to access additional doses through the mechanism. Countries with MDB-approved vaccination programmes can make requests to COVAX for additional vaccine doses. To date, Gavi has already ordered 140 million additional vaccine doses through cost sharing on behalf of 15 AMC countries, at a total value of $800 million.

Countries specify the preferred type of vaccine, number of doses and their desired delivery window, enabling COVAX to aggregate demand and exercise its options under agreements with vaccine manufacturers. The MDB provides a payment confirmation, which enables COVAX to confirm its order. Subject to finalisation of the legal agreement, MedAccess and Open Society’s support aims to provide a backstop for Gavi during the period from exercising its option to country payment being confirmed; without the guarantees Gavi would be required to hold donor funds in reserve. This guarantee provides financial independence to Gavi for the benefit of COVAX AMC country partners.

On April 8, 2022, Gavi will hold the 2022 Gavi COVAX AMC Summit, co-hosted by Germany. Gavi aims to raise at least $5.2 billion in urgent financial support for COVAX, including $3.8 billion in donor funding for lower-income countries supported by the Gavi COVAX AMC. At least $1 billion of the $5.2 billion is intended to come from cost-sharing.

To date, COVAX has shipped more than 1.4 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses to 145 countries and territories.

After his success in Ghent-Wevelgem, Biniam Girmay is courted by Ineos Grenadiers

Biniam Girmay’s victory in Ghent-Wevelgem left no one indifferent in the peloton. In addition to the fact that the Eritrean has made cycling history by becoming the first African to win a great classic, the 22-year-old nugget is now arousing envy. Central Region: Success in Reforestation

Protecting the natural environment and redressing Eritrea with vegetation has been a major task in Eritrea following its independence. Students Summer Work Program was launched in 1994 with the grand goal of working for reforestation, soil and water conservation and environmental protection. The reforestation programs carried out in the post-independence period have shown remarkable progress. This article briefly highlights the reforestation campaigns, including soil and water conservation and tree planting programs in the Central region.

To make the greening campaign in the Central region a success, over one million tree seedlings have been supplied annually by nine nursery stations in the region. The major nurseries are located in Bietghergish and Adi-Quntsi (Berik sub-zone), Shimanugus-Lalay (Serejeka sub-zone), Merhano (Galanefhi sub-zone) while smaller stations are found in Gheremi, Himberti, Zagir, Adi-Shaka and Adi-Hawesha.

Eucalyptus is the most widely preferred tree in the highlands because it grows fast and has big demand in the construction sector. But efforts have also been made to conserve and recover indigenous trees by encouraging the planning of trees such as olive, pine and acacia.

Mr. Abraham Teklu, representative of Wildlife and Forestry Authority in the Central region, has been working in the field for over 30 years. He said reforestation is a demanding task, and although the work that has been done in reforestation is encouraging a lot more needs to be done.

To make the tree seedlings resistant to water shortages that may occur in the plantation areas, they are grown to reach at least a height of 30 cm and pass through hardening phases in the nursery stations. “The seedlings that pass all hardening phases show a 100% growing rate,” Mr. Abrham said.

Most areas in the Central region have suitable temperatures for the seedlings to grow. The regular rainy seasons and early rains have impacted the growth of the seedlings planted in various localities. Mr. Abraham said that studies show there has been an average growth rate of 70% to 80% of the trees.

The Central region has small farm areas and the tree seedlings have been mostly planted in places that are less convenient for the cultivation of crops. Enclosures have been made to ensure the safety of the trees while grazing lands have been identified to avoid conflict between farmers and the reforestation program organizers.

Residents of the Central region have been very supportive of the forestry programs. According to Mr. Abraham, in collaboration with the governments in their administrative areas and other stake holders, communities in the Serejeka sub-zone have been using income generated from the sales of trees to support social service providers in their localities.

The success of the reforestation program cannot be guaranteed without efforts to protect the trees that have been planted. Therefore, for big enclosures villagers nominate foresters whose monthly salaries are paid by the Government whereas smaller ones are monitored by foresters who are not given salaries but supported in kind by village communities.

Communal seedling planting programs have been regularly carried out in villages, and the Summer Students Work Program has been carried out since 1994. Both campaigns have made a difference in environmental protection in the Central region through soil and water conservation schemes and redressing various areas with vegetation.

The Government, the private sector as well as religious institutions have been playing roles in reforestation programs. The Eritrean Defense Forces have been planting trees in their camps and individuals have been planting trees in their farms and their houses’ courtyards.

As part of the national greening campaign, 17 institutions from the Central region have participated in reforestation programs initiated in 2021 in Mai-Dmnet area. Overall, the institutions have planted on 38 hectares of land around 90,000 seedlings, whose growth rate is 92%, Mr. Abraham said. The area has been designated as an enclosure protected by foresters. In a similar vein, organized by the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers some institutions have been planting trees in Embaderho with promising results.

All parties engaged in the planting of seedlings in Mai-Dmnet area have made good contribution to the success of the greening project. The wetness in the area sustained due to the rainy season of the eastern lowlands has been helpful for the reforestation efforts in the area. Similar reforestation initiatives have been taken around Mai-Sirwa.

Mr. Abraham said that a successful reforestation program cannot be carried out without the construction of terraces and other means of soil and water conservation schemes. Representatives of the institutions that took part in the planting of trees and construction of terraces in Mai-Dmnet, for instance, visited the area and expressed their satisfaction that their hard work has paid off, Mr. Abrham said. “We have been pushing forward with our commitment to increase our efforts in the construction of terraces to bring about drastic change.”

Mr. Abraham said that reforestation programs have been carried out for over 28 years and the result is quite impressive. Overall, the reforestation programs in the Central, Southern and Anseba regions and some parts of the Gash-Barka region have been quite encouraging and the limited growth rate of reforested areas in other regions is mainly due to their hot climate.

Mr. Abraham invites everyone to visit the reforested areas and see the achievements for themselves. He finally called on members of the general public to take communal or individual initiatives to plant trees, and he gave his reassurance that they will be provided with seedlings and technical assistance.
