Nazret Weldu Ghebrehiwet of Eritrea, took first place in the women’s division at the 2022 Daegu International Marathon.

The elite marathon event invited by foreign athletes, which was suspended after the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), was held in Daegu on the 3rd with great success. With the motto of being carbon neutral, eco-friendly souvenirs such as a T-shirt made of Regen fabric, a polyester fiber recycled from plastic bottles, and a soap finish medal, were provided, attracting attention.

According to the city of Daegu, the elite event of the 2022 Daegu International Marathon was held face-to-face at Daegu Stadium in Suseong-gu, Daegu on the morning of the 3rd. It is the first marathon event inviting foreign athletes to be suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s Daegu International Marathon is being held face-to-face and non-face-to-face with over 11,000 participants from the 25th of last month to the 30th of this month.

About 150 elite athletes, including 37 from 10 countries, participated in the event, and Ethiopia’s Shephira Aredo took the men’s championship with a record of 2:06:28. In second place, Kenya’s Dixon Chumba, who was predicted to be a strong contender for the championship with a record of 2 hours and 4 minutes overseas, was runner-up with 2 hours 7 minutes 10 seconds, 42 seconds behind Aredo. Morocco’s Hamra Sari (2 hours 7 minutes 14 seconds) took third place.

In the women’s division, Eritrean national Nazareth Weldou Ghebrechwet won the championship with a record time of 2:21:56.

In this tournament, the elite match will be played face-to-face on this day, the Masters face-to-face match will be held on the half course for 9 days, the 10km course for 10 days, and the Masters non-face-to-face match will be held from the 25th of last month to the 30th of this month. Plogging means picking up trash while running to protect health and the environment.

Nearly 2,000 people are participating in the blogging event, as local elementary, middle and high school students can be recognized for 4 hours of volunteer work.

Nazret Weldu destroys three records at Daegu Marathon

The 32 year-old who came to this race with a personal best of 2:28.07 that she got last year at the Milano marathon destroyed three records in one race.

Weldu broke the Eritrean National record, the race Course Record of 2:23.28 that had been set three years ago by Margaret Agai from Kenya and she also thrashed her Personal best setting a new course record of 2:21.56.

Weldu was followed by Pamela Rotich from Kenya who was the fastest athlete on paper also ran under the old course record as well as destroying her personal best to crossing the finish in a new life time best of 2:22.56.

Kenya’s Judith Jerubet finished a distant third as she closed the podium three finishes in a time of 2:26.17.

Athlete Nazareth Woldu registers new record

Olympian Athlete Nazareth Woldu registered new record finishing the race in 21 minutes and 28 seconds at the Seoul International Marathon (Daegu) that was held today, 03 April in Seoul, South Korea.

Athlete Nazareth improves the record that was held by herself with 7 minutes.

Moreover, Olympian Athlete Nazareth has improved the 10 km national record that was held by Athlete Simret Sultan since 2006.

Athlete Nazareth has also improved her national marathon record for the fourth time including at the Beirut Marathon 2018, Gold-Coast Marathon 2019, Australia, Milano Marathon 2021 and at this year’s Seoul Marathon 2022.

According to her coach, Livingston Abraha, Athlete Nazareth is preparing to take part at the International Athletics competition that will be held this year in the United States.

The Mereb Setit Athletics Training Center has produced many Olympian Athletes including Nazareth Woldu and Rahel Daniel.

The Daegu International Marathon 2022 results and recap on Sunday (3) as Ethiopia’s Shifera Tamru and Nazret Weldu from Eritrea secure the victories.

The men’s and women’s results from the Daegu International Marathon 2022 with Ethiopia’s Shifera Tamru and Nazret Weldu from Eritrea winning their respective categories on Sunday (3). The event which took place in the South Korean city, is part of the World Athletics Label Road Races Elite Series.

In the men’s race, Tamru clocked a credible 2:06:31 to outpace his rivals on the day, improving on his second-place finish when he raced last in the city in 2019.

Dickson Chumba of Kenya, running his first marathon of the season, ran 2:07:11 for second place with Hamza Sahli of Morocco crossing the finish line third at 2:07:15 to improve on his previous personal best performance.

Kenya’s Zablon Chumba was just behind in fourth place, also with a PB of 2:07:18, with Balew Yihunle of Ethiopia rounding out the top five finishers with a time of 2:07:27.

In the women’s section, meanwhile, Nazret Weldu ran a big lifetime best to dominate the Daegu International Marathon 2022 race, clocking a time of 2:21:56 to secure the title and won by almost four minutes.

Pamela Rotich of Kenyan also stopped the clock in a new PB of 2:26:17 for second place with compatriot Judith Jerubet getting third, also with a PB of 2:26:17.

Completing the top five finishers on the day were Abebech Afework (2:26:18) of Ethiopia in fourth place and countrywoman Nurit Shimels (2:27:58) in fifth.

The top South Korean finishers were Lee Jang-kun (2:17:14) in 15th place on the men’s side and Su-Min Lee (2:32:08) in seventh place on the women’s side.
