Office Head of MoFA Confers with French Parliamentary Delegation


Addis Ababa: Ambassador Eshete Tilahun, Head of the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), received France’s parliamentary delegation, headed by Thomas Gassilloud, Chairman of the French National Assembly Committee on National Defense and Armed Forces today.

During their discussion, Ambassador Eshete stated the longstanding and comprehensive relationship between Ethiopia and France, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He further mentioned the need to further strengthen the multifaceted relations between the two countries.

Thomas Gassilloud expressed that France gives importance to its relationship with Ethiopia and is keen on expanding inter-parliamentary relations.

Ethiopia, France Keen on Strengthen Parliamentary Relations


Addis Ababa: Ethiopia and France have agreed to further strengthen the parliamentary relations between the two countries and cooperate in various areas of common interest.

Chairman of Standing Committee of Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs at the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Dima Nego received French delegation led by Chairman of National Assembly’s Committee of National Defence and Armed Forces, Thomas Gassiloud.

During the occasion, Dima Nego briefed the delegation about current situation in Ethiopia and various reform programs launched to improve the economy of the country and ensure peace and security.

He also briefed about the MoU Ethiopia recently signed with Somaliland, which ensures joint development.

Since 1993, Ethiopia has become a landlocked country, and access to the Red Sea is crucial for Ethiopia’s long-term national and economic security, he said, adding that there is no landlocked country like Ethiopia in the world with such big population.

As it lies in geostrategic location, Et
hiopia is a pivotal to the region with large population, long history and contributing to peace and security of neighboring countries, he added.

Despite the significance of the MOU for shared interests, some are disseminating distorted information and needs to be rectified, he said.

The security in the Red Sea requires Ethiopia’s contribution and called on the French government to help Ethiopia in its effort for sea outlet.

Regarding bilateral relations with France, the ties between the two countries are excellent, he said, adding that the parliamentary relation is important to further enhance the exiting relations and openly discuss various issues of common interest.

He further said the relationships between the two countries open good opportunity to strengthen people to people relations.

Members of the standing committee also stated that Ethiopia needs sea access only through peaceful means and give and take approach.

We are keen to strengthen ties with French parliament, they said.

ational Assembly’s Committee on National Defence and Armed Forces, Thomas Gassiloud on his part said that France is ready to work with Ethiopia in social and economic and other fields.

He expressed that his delegation understands the situation that Ethiopia has gone through in the past due to drought and conflict.

We are ready to work with Ethiopia in the various sector including military, he said.

The relationship between the two countries has marked 125 years and they enjoyed excellent relations.

DPM and FM Demeke Meets Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister on Margins of WEF


Addis Ababa: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, earlier this morning met with the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on the margins of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos-Klosters in Switzerland.

They discussed mutual engagements at various highest levels of respective governments to further strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

By citing the fact that Ethiopia opened its Embassy in Islamabad recently, Demeke reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to consolidating Ethio-Pakistani ties.

He also mentioned that Ethiopia will work towards diversifying its engagements with Pakistan including trade and investment.

Caretaker Prime Minister Kakar on his part stated by capitalizing on the positive momentum from the commitment of the governments of Pakistan and Ethiopia to boost relations, his country will work to strengthen ties in the areas of trade, investment, skills transfer as well as people-to-people rel
ations.

Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, who is currently serving as the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan succeeded Former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in August 2023.

The Embassy of Ethiopia to Pakistan was officially inaugurated on 11 May 2023 where Jemal Beker is the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

Addis Ababa: Ethiopia’s multilateral diplomacy has been earning the country significant achievements in international relations, according to the country’s ambassadors who are currently in Addis Ababa for the annual ministerial meeting.

Ethiopia’s Ambassador to UK, Teferi Meles told ENA that Ethiopia has been pursuing foreign relations and diplomatic activities that befit its long history of diplomacy.

The country, which is a founder of the League of Nations, the United Nations and the Organization of African Unity, has been actively participating in the multilateral organizations, he added.

‘Ethiopia’s foreign relations and diplomatic activities across the ages have shown its significant place in the field of diplomacy through its participation in the multilateral sphere,’ he noted.

Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Algeria, Nebiat Getachew said Ethiopia has participated as a member or founder of all the international institutions and organizations that we know today.

And the unique Diplomacy Week organized by t
he Ministry of Foreign Affairs reflects the nation’s greatness and its significant role in multilateral diplomacy at international arena, he stated.

According to him, foreign relations and diplomacy work should not be confined to the ministry or diplomats but needs to involve the community.

Thus, it is necessary to make diplomacy more comprehensive in order to create foreign relations that have redeemed the times, Nebiat added.

Ethiopia had a high reputation in the world before many Latin American, Caribbean, Asian and African countries became a country in the world, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Lencho Bati said on his part.

Throughout the long history of Ethiopia, the leaders of each generation have introduced Ethiopia to the world by creating strong diplomatic relations, he pointed out.

According to Lencho, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has played a crucial role in promoting green diplomacy through the Green Legacy initiative and enabling Ethiopia to join BRICS.

Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye added that Ethiopia’s diplomatic achievements recorded in the last five years are proof of the commitment of the leaders.

Yet Ethiopia should strengthen its global relations with other countries in order to reinforce its influence and acceptance in the region.

The Ethiopian ambassadors have visited the exhibition ‘From an African Hub to the World,’ which highlights Ethiopia’s 116-year diplomatic history and contemporary diplomatic accomplishments.

The exhibition at the Science Museum will remain open to public until February 2, 2024.

KEETMANSHOOP: Kharas Governor Aletha Frederick has urged employees of the ||Kharas Regional Council to be punctual and to be productive as their behaviour affects inhabitants of the region.

Addressing a staff meeting of the Directorate of Education, Arts, and Culture on Monday, Frederick expressed her observations of council staff’s behaviour, saying some come to work late and leave early. She said their behaviour deprives inhabitants of the region of effective and efficient service delivery.

‘This government is not only for people in Windhoek, it is for all of us. You are here to serve the people at this level. It is our responsibility to make sure that government services are delivered to the best of our abilities. The minister or the executive director will not come and deliver those services to the people here, we are the ones to do it. There are rules to be followed, follow them,’ she said.

The governor also said while some employees struggle with punctuality, others are punctual, but they are not pro
ductive while at work.

‘Being a faithful servant is not only about coming to work early and leaving late, it’s about being productive, you should have goals at work that you tick off daily when achieved. That way you can be proud when you receive your salary, you cannot be happy to receive a salary you did absolutely nothing for,’ Frederick added.

Also speaking was ||Kharas Regional Council Chief Executive Officer Benedictus Diergaardt, who shared the governor’s sentiments. He urged employees to obey the rules and regulations of the Public Service Act, saying they should not forget the reason they are called public servants is because they should serve the people.

‘You are not doing anyone a favour by being here, you are here to work and in return we pay you a salary… Do your job because if you don’t, the community at large suffers,’ he stressed.

He called on the staff to work together, respect each other and support each other to the best of their abilities.

Expo Properly Depicts Ethiopia’s Success in Multilateral Diplomacy, Int’l Engagements


Addis Ababa: Ethiopia has been able to effectively depict its key multilateral diplomacy and international engagements at the ongoing exhibition, which was made public last week as part of its “Diplomacy Week,” Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Ambassador Meles Alem remarked.

The exhibition was inaugurated last week at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa under the theme “From an African Hub to the World.”

It aims to inspire Ethiopians to discover more about their country’s diplomatic history by highlighting the 116-year diplomatic history and contemporary diplomatic accomplishments.

The spokesperson told ENA today that the exhibition has been helping to demonstrate Ethiopia’s role in multilateral diplomacy and international stages.

It is also to fostering a sense of national patriotism among citizens by giving everyone the opportunity to serve as an ambassador for their nation, ambassador Meles added.

The exhibition has attained its intended goals, the Spokesperson said stressing the need to intensify Ethiopia
‘s diplomacy by employing contemporary mechanisms including digital diplomacy.

He also announced plan to organize similar grand events annually with a view to encourage all citizens freely engage in the diplomatic affairs of the country

AUC Calls for Solidarity, Unity to Forge Viable Strategies to Achieve Agenda 2063


Addis Ababa: Amidst challenges affecting the continent, the African Union Commission (AUC) today urged Africans to strengthen solidarity and build unity to forge viable strategies to achieve agenda 2063.

This call was made at the opening of the 47th ordinary session of the African Union’s Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), a crucial organ that sets the stage for the Pan-African bloc’s decisions.

Addressing the opening of the meeting in Addis Ababa, AUC Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat highlighted the multifaceted challenges Africa is facing, including internal conflicts and humanitarian crises in Sudan, Eastern DRC, and beyond, while recognizing the global ripples of the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine conflicts.

He said the only recourse for Africa amid the challenges is unity and its solidarity.

The unity which will be built with perseverance and tolerance is an effort of cooperation which transcends the particular and specificities and considerations which are in contradictions with the gen
eral situation and which calls for mutual understanding, the Chair explained.

Stating that the commission cooperates with all the organs, the PRC is the corner stone of the commission as it prepares the form and content to the decisions of the deliberations, the chairperson urged the PRC to come up with a strategy that will enable the pan-African bloc maintain its direction to the 2063 goal.

Peace, security, development and integration are the core elements of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, he pointed out.

Reading the agenda items of the PRC, the chairperson realized the enormous tasks awaiting ahead that need shuttle down, dedication and partnership to carry out.

The agenda items include report on administrative, budgetary, and financial matters, multilateral cooperation, humanitarian issues, the report of the specialized technical committee and those of the commission and the organs, the internal and recurring crisis the Pan-African parliament in the institutions and preparation of the agenda of the e
xecutive council and the assembly.

Noting that the election of members of the new commission is part of the institutional reform of the union, he revealed that the year 2024 is to prepare for the campaign of the election of the new leadership of the commission at the beginning of next year.

African Union’s Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) Chairman, Usman Yoseph said irrespective of the origins of the challenges in Africa and globally, solidarity and tolerance should be the only weapons of dialogue to ensure peaceful co-existence.

Stating that the PRC’s session is devoted to the preparation of the next ordinary summit of the organization that will be held in mid February 2024, the chairman pointed out.

The session is anticipated to consider all types of reports of the commission, organs, sub-committees as well as the organizations reform and assessment of the first 10-years plan of agenda 2063 and launching a similar 10-year plan.

In the same vein, the PRC’s session will also consider the road ma
p of this year’s theme which is “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa.”

The PRC conducts the day-to-day business of the AU on behalf of the Assembly and Executive Council, reports to the Executive Council, prepares the Council’s work and acts on its instructions.
