Murkomen Warns Against Incitement to Theft at Multinational Farms

Murang'a: Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to political leaders who are inciting citizens to invade and steal from multinational farms in Murang'a County. This incitement, according to Murkomen, is being justified under the guise of addressing historical land injustices, but it results in lawlessness that endangers lives and livelihoods.

According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen made these remarks during the Jukwaa la Usalama Central region chapter tour in Murang'a. He expressed concern over the growing trend of some elected leaders justifying the theft of farm produce from Del Monte and Kakuzi farms. Murkomen described this narrative as dangerous, noting that it jeopardizes not only the workers but also the country's economy and investment climate. He emphasized that stealing and trespassing are illegal, and leaders must cease normalizing criminal acts under the pretext of historical grievances.

Murkomen's comments follow public outcry after two young men lost their lives at these farms less than two weeks ago. One of the men was allegedly run over by a G4S vehicle at the Del Monte farm, while the other was fatally wounded during a clash between the public and security officials. While expressing regret over these deaths, Murkomen warned that continued lawlessness would only escalate violence.

Murkomen highlighted the critical role multinational companies like Del Monte and Kakuzi play in Kenya's economy. He warned that unchecked invasions and theft would deter investors and destabilize the agricultural sector, a key employer and revenue generator. He urged the youth in Murang'a and across the country to seek employment opportunities at these farms instead of participating in violent raids.

Murkomen also stressed that grievances related to land ownership should be addressed through legal means while maintaining law and order. He acknowledged the ongoing issues of land fraud and double allocations in Murang'a and other parts of the country, assuring that the government is addressing these matters through appropriate channels. The Ministry of Lands, in collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), is actively tackling land fraud and advancing land titling efforts to resolve historical injustices legally.

The Jukwaa la Usalama forums, part of a national dialogue series, aim to bring together government officials, security agencies, and citizens to discuss peace, security, and development. The forum will next visit Kirinyaga, Nyeri, and Nyandarua counties.
