Omaheke police refute claims of harvesting of private parts

GOBABIS: The Namibian Police Force in the Omaheke Region have warned residents against circulating claims on social media of people reportedly harvesting private parts in the region.

Regional Unit Commander for Community Affairs, Inspector Fina Sakayengenga on Tuesday at a media conference said the residents and anyone responsible for spreading false information should stop as this has caused havoc and confusion among residents in the region.

“There is information that is circulating in the region of private parts that had been cut off and are being used for ritual purposes. I want to tell you that this information is fake – there is nothing as such happening in our region,” she said.

This information, she said is linked by the public to an incident of attempted murder that happened in Aminuis, adding that the attempted murder issue is an issue and incident on its own and it cannot be linked to the fake information circulating on social media.

She urged the community to be vigilant and refrain from circulating this type of information.

“The suspect of the attempted murder is arrested and currently behind bars in Leonardville, he did not get bail yet and I cannot also confirm his next court appearance, but can confirm that all the information circulating is fake,” Sakayengenga stated.

‘Include us when developing programmes for us’: ||Kharas youth

KEETMANSHOOP: Young people from the ||Kharas Region said there is a need for Government to involve more young people when developing programmes aimed to address unemployment among young people.

These sentiments were part of the inputs from some youth on Tuesday in Keetmanshoop, during a public hearing by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resources and Community Development on the motion of youth unemployment.

One of the participants, Rodler Gertze said: “We the young people know what we need to ensure the unemployment issue is addressed, we know the programmes that will work for us so we need to be part of the programme setting process. There is also a need to invest in sports and talent development and these players can earn a living.”

Laurentius Roos said Government should regulate companies especially private companies to ensure that they do in-service training than demanding or requiring young people to have years of experience.

“These companies, even the mining companies want five to seven years of experience for a general position, now how do you expect a young person coming from school or university to have such experience, these companies could rather take these young people and do on-job training,” said Roos.

Participant Mohamed Frederick said there is a need to change the education system to be more technical and centred on producing employers and not just employees.

“Our education system is designed for us to be employees, I think we need to improve on our technical subjects at schools so that our skills and talents are developed at an early age, so we thrive in those areas too, to ensure that we produce and manufacture our own things that will help us towards industrialisation,” he added.

Fabianus Sonn said: “We believe that vocational training centres should be able to take in those that do not have Grade 10 or Grade 12, we get people that grow up in child-headed households and they are forced to leave school at an early age to take care of the other siblings, now when these people get old, they want to start studying and improve their living standard but they’ve got nowhere to study or so,” he said.

Other issues raised at the meeting include Government investing more in agriculture and sports and to come up with better programmes that support entrepreneurs where entrepreneurs have the resources they need to progress.

Fishing company donates to Mwadhina Gwanembenge school

OSHAKATI: Tshwaragano Fishing Company donated IT equipment to Mwadhina Gwanembenge Combined School to the value of N.dollars 50 000 at Oshakati on Tuesday.

During the official handover, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Sylvia Makgone said the school still needs more computers, thus it’s important to learn to share and invest in the education of the Namibian child.

Makgone stated that by investing in the education of the Namibian child, they are not only giving them a chance to thrive but also fostering a future generation of leaders who will contribute to the growth and prosperity of the nation.

“These computers are a symbol of equality and inclusivity, and will be ensuring that every child has the tools they need to succeed,” she said.

According to Makgone, currently people live in an era of profound technological advancement, and nowhere is this transformation more evident than in the field of education.

She indicated that the school computers they just received are more than simply electronic devices; they are tools of empowerment and opportunity.

Makgone said through access to technology, students can explore a world of knowledge, expand their horizons, and develop essential digital skills that are increasingly crucial in the contemporary world.

Further, she said that fishing companies should not only do mere Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS), but it should be an act of willingness and from the heart.

“We are not selling the fishing quotas that we give to the fishing companies, so freely they should also give to their communities,” she concluded.

School principal Immanuel Aron said that they want to introduce computer studies as a subject, and first needed computers to accomplish their aim, thus needing the support of stakeholders to make this a reality.

He noted that the school aims to fill one of the classrooms with 20 computers.

Director of Tshwaragano Fishing Company Inocencio Verde stated that the donation will help the school meet its goals of achieving the desired 20 computers.

“This is a step towards achieving all they need and embracing the motto of ‘just start’ which is a leap of faith for achieving anything they set their mind on,”
