Women Legislators Condemn GBV Atrocities in Nyamira

Nyamira: National Assembly women legislators have castigated Gender Based Violence (GBV) atrocities in the Gusii region in the strongest terms possible, observing that the rate of GBV crime in the region is alarming. While rallying support for Nyamira County MP Jerusha Momanyi's bid to vie for the governor's seat in 2027 at Matutu PAG Secondary School, Nyandarua County Women Representative, who is also the chairlady of Women Reps in Kenya, Faith Gitau, highlighted concerns over the high rate of GBV and femicide atrocities in Nyamira and the broader Gusii region, portraying it as an insecure place.

According to Kenya News Agency, Gitau advised that when love and mutual relations in the family fade and one partner becomes abusive to the extent of threatening another's life, it is advisable to flee immediately, as verbal murder threats are real and can soon be executed. She emphasized that an abusive union is not worth anyone's life, stressing the importance of preserving life over enduring an abusive relationship or marriage.

Vihiga County Woman Rep Beatrice Adagala underscored the critical role women play in their homes, advocating for love and respect towards women. She remarked that women ensure family continuity despite economic constraints. Adagala emphasized that women, girls, children, and people with disabilities are at high risk of GBV crimes. She vowed that women leaders would not sit idly by as these vulnerable groups suffer, promising to ensure perpetrators face justice.

Samburu County Woman Rep Pauline Lenguris expanded on the types of GBV atrocities, which include not only murder but also verbal assault, rape, defilement, sodomy, FGM, and cyberbullying. She warned GBV perpetrators that their actions have led to community discrimination and pledged that women legislators would fight GBV to create safe and nurturing environments for families.

The women representatives collectively praised President Ruto's development plans and implementation strategy, commending his efforts to stabilize the country's economy by 2027. Among others present at the public rally were County women representatives from Kisii, West Pokot, Embu, Kwale, Siaya, Narok, and two elected Members of Parliament from Aldai and Kitui South Constituencies.
