”It’s My Dam” Created Great Sense of Ownership, Inspired Ethiopians: Chief GERD Negotiator

Addis Ababa: The motto “It’s My Dam” has created a great sense of ownership and inspired Ethiopians to provide unwavering support for the construction of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to USA and Chief GERD Negotiator Sileshi Bekele told ENA.

The construction of the dam which commenced in 2011 is now near completion.

Ethiopia has repeatedly expressed its stand that the construction of the dam is based on cooperation, fair utilization of water resource, and good neighborhood.

Also, it has strong position that the tripartite negotiation with Egypt and Sudan on GERD should be based on mutual benefit, respect, and fairness.

The tripartite talks regarding the filling of GERD and related issues was held in January 2020 and concluded with no agreement.

During a press conference following the collapsed talks, the then Minister of Water and Energy and the current Ethiopian Ambassador to USA and Chief GERD Negotiator was asked about the management of the dam upon its completion.

A lady jou
rnalist from Middle East asked him, “Who is going to administer the dam upon completion?”, Sileshi recalls.

He proudly responded with the famous answer “It’s my dam. We Ethiopians will manage it.”

The chief negotiator affirmed that the motto #ItsMyDam has special place in the heart of all Ethiopians since that historic press conference.

The motto has played a pivotal role to mobilize the public by creating sense of ownership and motivation to support the dam, he elaborated.

#ItsMyDam, which was widely promoted by institutions, individuals, the mass media and social media, has created great inspiration among the general public.

The 13th year laying of the foundation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will be commemorated at the end of this month under the theme: ‘Together We Made It Possible.’

The theme ‘Together We Made It Possible’ demonstrates that Ethiopians have reached the last phase of the construction of dam by working in unity and it is a gratitude and recognition of Ethiopians for their unw
avering support and contribution for the dam, he further noted.

During the past years, over 19 billion Birr was raised for the construction of the dam through various fund raising mechanisms.

Completion of Africa’s Grand Dam Would be Great News for Continent: Negotiating Team Member

Addis Ababa: The completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) should be big news for the continent, especially for the east African countries, GERD Negotiating Team Member Gideon Asfaw said.

The construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest power plant, has reached 95 percent, and is expected to be fully completed within 7 months.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Gideon said the execution of the dam through the knowledge and resource of Ethiopians is indeed gratifying.

The launching of the dam about which a lot has been written had influence on nations, he noted.

In this respect, the completion of the dam should be “great news” for Africa, especially for neighboring countries, the negotiator believes.

According to him, the dam plays a leading role in strengthening regional ties as the benefits of the GERD are not limited to Ethiopia.

It will rather bring a number of benefits, including prevention of flooding and evaporation as well as provision of regional power in
terconnection.

Gideon further stated that Ethiopia should continue working on similar projects to support its economic growth and its journey to get out of poverty by using natural resources.

As a nation that has strong commitment to resolving issues through dialogue, Ethiopia has made great efforts to resolve the unresolved issues around the dam in negotiations.

“Ethiopia pursued and still pursues the principle of equitable and reasonable utilization of the Abbay River, and the dam does not inflict any significant harm on downstream countries. The country’s firm stand is adhering to the principle of mutual benefit and resolving issues through dialogue,” he stressed.

However, it was not possible to end the negotiations between the three countries because the proposals presented by Egypt were retroactive and did not lead to an agreement.

The dam, which contributes greatly to the common development of the region, currently holds 42 billion cubic meters of water and generates power with two turbines.

Upon
going fully operational, GERD will have installed capacity of generating 5,150 MW which will be the largest hydropower project in Africa with the amount of electricity it generates.

It will also store 74 billion cubic meters of water that benefits Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.
