Jeju Coffee Farm Expresses Desire to Expand Research to Ethiopia’s Coffee Bean, Add value

Jeju Coffee Farm CEO, Kim Young-han, also Known as “Coffee Virtuoso” of Jeju Island, expressed his strong desire to expand research to Ethiopia’s coffee bean and add value to it by producing beverage like “wine,” and making cosmetics from it.

Ethiopia’s ambassador to South Korea,Dessie Dalkie met with Kim Young-han, Jeju Coffee Farm CEO and explored the possibility of adding value to Ethiopian coffee beans.

Kim Young-han, referred to as the “Coffee Virtuoso” of Jeju Island by CNN, is a former Samsung Electronics executive who went into the coffee business after relocating to the island.

While he had succeeded in producing locally grown coffee & selling it at his cafe that was not the end of his experimentation. He started to use coffee cherry peel to make “wine” with volcanic bedrock water.

His latest endeavor is a line of natural cosmetics imbibed with rich antioxidants derived from coffee beans. “When I drink coffee, I am drinking my own creation” Kim Young-han noted during the discussion with the Ambassador.

He added, “I am very aware of the fact that Coffee from Ethiopia is renowned for its vibrant fruity and flowery characteristics.”

Kim Young-han has also expressed his strong desire to expand his research to Ethiopia’s coffee bean and add value to it by producing beverage like “wine,” and making cosmetics from it.

He requested the embassy to collaborate with him in order to increase the popularity of Ethiopian coffee.

Ambassador Dessie Dalkie said that Ethiopia is the birth place of the coffee bean and describe Ethiopian coffee as sweet like chocolate, fruity flavor and aromatic unlike any other coffee.

“Ethiopian coffee being superior quality, adding additional value could raise global demand for it. Hence, any effort of adding value to our magic bean, Ethiopian coffee is always welcomed,” he added.

The Ambassador affirmed to Kim Young-han that the embassy and the Ethiopian Government are ready to work closely with him in his effort to produce a product like “wine” out of Ethiopian coffee beans and other initiatives he will take to promote Ethiopian coffee and enhance its demand.

Separatists shoot resisting women in Big Babanki

Several women were injured as Separatists who identified themselves as Ambazonia forces targeted women in Big Babanki, a village in Mezam , north west region of Cameroon.

CNA learned that the incident took place on the eve to the country’s National Day celebration, a feast that takes place every May 20.

War levy

On Friday May 19, 2023, some women protested the imposed levy of FCFA 10,000 per male and FCFA 5000 per female. Pleading with the separatists to abolish such monthly levies because the effect of the war has also rendered them poor.

Since 2016, Separatists in the north west and south west regions, are fighting thr central government in a move to create a separate state called Ambazonia.

For the past seven years, the war has caused economic hardship to the population of these regions.

But to make more money and fund the war, a group of Ambazonia separatists have resorted to demanding money on impulse.

A group that has supported this initiative is the Ambazonia Governing Council.

But there has been dissenting voices. The reactions were met with bullets and intimidation.

“As I am writing to you now there is tension in my village Big babanki this criminals are moving from one quarter to the other collecting all the names of the people in that quarter and saying that each person will be paying 10000 for the men and 5000 for women,” a source told CNA.

Those who resisted were shot in the legs while others were vandalised.

The women are being treated in nearby hospitals.

Ethiopian Starts Passenger Flight Service to Copenhagen

Ethiopian Airlines has launched a direct passenger flight service to Copenhagen, Denmark today.

The new flight will be operated five times a week except on Tuesdays and Sundays.

The direct route will create new business opportunities between the countries.

It will also become a crucial gateway for Ethiopian Airlines in northern Europe and southern Scandinavia.

Launching the passenger flight service this evening, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said the airline has been increasing its international destinations as part of its growth strategic plan.

The newly inaugurated flight to Copenhagen will play crucial role to connect Ethiopia with Denmark and African countries, he added.

The flight will contribute vital role to boost trade and investment relations as well as people to people interactions and expedite tourism between the countries, Mesfin said.

Ethiopian has also reached 63 destinations in Africa alone, according to him.

The CEO said Ethiopian Airlines is expanding its aircraft numbers and destinations.

It has received an Air bus aircraft and will receive additional 2 new aircraft from Boing soon, he pointed out.

Denmark Embassy in Ethiopia Councilor Siv Behrendt said the flight will help to elevation the economic and diplomatic cooperation between Ethiopia and Denmark to a higher level.

Ethiopian Airlines will deploy Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the route, with 315 seat arrangement.

Ethiopian first started serving Copenhagen in November 1999, but the flight was suspended about four years later.

Ethiopian commands the lion’s share of the Pan African passenger and cargo network operating the youngest and most modern fleet to more than 145 domestic and international passenger and cargo destinations across five continents.

In addition to its main hub in Addis Ababa, it is also pursuing its multi-hub strategy through a hub in Lomé, Togo with ASKY, in Lilongwe, Malawi with Malawi Airlines, and in Lusaka, Zambia with Zambia Airways.

After the ceremony, the Congolese president laid the foundation stone for the project.

President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso yesterday attended a ceremony for the opening of a road construction project launched by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) in the country’s northern province of Sangha.

During the ceremony, Jean-Jacques Bouy, minister of development, territorial equipment and major works, underlined the importance of the project for the economic and social development of local governments, highlighting the constant high-efficiency and high-quality demonstrated by CRBC over the years in the country.

After the ceremony, the Congolese president laid the foundation stone for the project.

The 47-km road will connect the city of Ouesso to the urban community of Pokola.

The project also includes the construction of a 616-meter bridge over the Sangha river.

Ethiopian Investment Commission, China Chamber of Int’l Commerce Agree to Enhance Cooperation

Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) delegation conferred with China Chamber of International Commerce (CCOIC) officials in China.

Deputy Commissioner of EIC, Temesgen Tilahun and CCOIC Deputy Director General, Yang Hong expressed their keen mutual interest in advancing institutional cooperation.

The two sides, hence, agreed to revamp the partnership and embark on planned joint trade and investment promotion works to strengthen bilateral trade and investment partnerships between Ethiopia and China.

EIC investment delegation has also visited the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles (CCCT).

During the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Temesgen and vice chairman of CCCT Zhang Xinmin raised matters of mutual interest and agreed to rebuild and lead partnership initiatives between the two institutions based on the EIC-CCCT cooperation MoU signed in 2016.

Both sides stressed the need to develop a joint plan of action in facilitating business and investment relations in textile and apparel between the two countries.

Established in 1988, CCCT represents and coordinates over 12,000 companies whose investment and trade volumes account for 70 percent of the Chinese textile import and export business, according to EIC.

Ethiopia’s investment promotion delegation is in China for a working visit.

The Delegation has held meetings with officials of several institutions in China including Chinese Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA) to discuss ways to strengthening cooperation in the promotion of investments in the two countries.

More than 550 Million USD Earned from Horticulture Export in 8 Months of Current Fiscal Year: Association

The Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) announced that more than 550 million USD has been secured from the export of horticulture products in eight months of the current fiscal year.

The Association held experience sharing and field visits in flower farm companies located around Batu town to students and teachers of horticulture at Hawassa University today.

During the occasion, Promotion and Information Head of the Association, Yemisrach Birhanu said Ethiopia is the second nation in Africa after Kenya and 4th in the world in the production and export market of flower.

The association was established with a view to strengthen the international competitiveness of companies engaged in horticulture production and exports in order to help the country reap the economic benefits of the sector, Yemisrach said.

The association also strives to improve the competitiveness of members and promote sustainable growth of Ethiopian horticulture sector by providing innovative services.

Hence, the head stated that the association has been exerting efforts to strengthen Ethiopia’s international competitiveness and foreign exchange revenue from the horticulture sector including cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, and herbs among others.

To realizing this objective, she indicated that several trainings are being given to the companies in addition to providing incentives by developing international quality standard certification of various levels.

The association has established its own Technical and Vocational College that gives trainings to its members and others who wish to attend the courses.

Workplace safety and quality of production process are some of the key criteria vital to improve competitiveness; she said adding trainings are being organized to the companies and their experts to help them carry out the production process with quality standard and free of environmental pollution.

According to the head, the Association is also engaged in establishing market linkages between the producers and buyers using various methods.

She said horticulture sector is playing key role in the development of the national economy of Ethiopia, noting that more than 550 million USD has been secured from the export of horticulture products in eight months of the current fiscal year.

EHPEA is a business membership organization which is established in 2002 with the objective to promote the interest of members who are engaged in the production and export of cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, herbs, cuttings as well as vegetable seeds.

Ethiopia to Issue International Tender for Third Telecom License

Ethiopia has finalized its preparation to issue international tender in the coming June to license the third telecom operator soon, according to the Ethiopian Communication Authority (ECA).

Ethiopian Communication Authority (ECA) Director-General, Balcha Reba told ENA that the authority is finalizing its preparation to award license to the third telecom operator in Ethiopia.

Recall that the telecom sector has been open for competent international operators by the government of Ethiopia as part of the homegrown economic reform.

Based on the decision made to license two telecom service operators in the country, Ethiopia has awarded the Unified Telecommunications Operator License to a private consortium operating under the name Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia in 2022.

The introduction of Safaricom Ethiopia into the country’s telecom market creates competitions and inspires to have the third telecom operator in Ethiopia, he pointed out.

Noting that promotional activities have been done for investors to explore Ethiopia’s investment opportunities, Balcha said the desire from investors to invest in Ethiopia is increasing following the introduction of various incentives and the revision of investment law among others.

Stating that issuing the international tender for the third telecom license will take place next June, 2023, he said the license will be awarded via a competitive tender process with similar transparency which was done during the licensing process of Safaricom Ethiopia.

Increasing the number of telecom operators in Ethiopia to three would pave ways to expedite the ongoing efforts of digitalization in addition to strengthening the service,it was indicated.
