Ouagadougou: Nine countries from Africa and Europe have confirmed their participation in the 36th International Tour of Faso, as announced by the national organizing committee during a press conference in Ouagadougou. This year’s competition aims to capture the prestigious yellow jersey, with the event scheduled to take place from October 24 to November 2.
According to Burkina Information Agency, a total of 12 teams from the confirmed countries, including Belgium, Morocco, Benin, Cameroon, Mali, Ivory Coast, Niger, Togo, and host country Burkina Faso, will be competing in this edition. Burkina Faso will be represented by three teams. The president of the technical commission, Issouf Sawadogo, mentioned that registration is open until October 20 for additional countries interested in participating.
Vice-president of the organizing committee, Ms. Valerie Badolo/Tapsoba, highlighted the symbolic significance of this year’s event, emphasizing national resilience and showcasing Burkina Faso’s sporting capabilities. She assured the readiness of the organization, revealing that the budget of 435 million CFA francs is already 95% mobilized, with a week until the start of the event.
Ms. Badolo/Tapsoba also extended gratitude to President Ibrahim Traore for his commitment to sport as a means of fostering social cohesion and enhancing Burkina Faso’s international reputation.
The Burkinabe cycling teams, known as the “Stallions Cyclistes,” are focused on reclaiming the yellow jersey, a goal that eluded them in 2024. The teams have been rigorously preparing across various locations, achieving a strong average speed of 42 km/h. National technical director Martin Sawadogo expressed optimism about their chances, citing their recent performances.
Four jerseys, including the highly sought-after yellow jersey, will be contested this year, along with eleven scarves. The Tour will cover a competitive distance of 1155.070 km across nine regions, beginning on October 24.
