PM’s Security Adviser Says BRICS Membership Boosts Economic Dev’t, Increases Influence

Ethiopia’s membership to BRICS not only expand economic cooperation but also contributes to increase country’s influence on the multilateral fora, National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister, Redwan Hussain said.

Ethiopia’s bid to join the emerging-markets bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) was endorsed at the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, yesterday.

Recall Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been making great diplomatic efforts to get Ethiopia’s request for BRICS membership accepted.

Prime Minister Abiy, in his message after Ethiopia’s acceptance to BRICS, pointed out that great diplomatic efforts have been made in the past to get Ethiopia’s request accepted.

National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, Ambassador Redwan Hussain said that 40 countries worldwide have requested to become BRICS member.

Among them, he mentioned that only six countries, including Ethiopia, had their membership requests accepted.

In this regard, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has made great efforts to get Ethiopia’s request accepted in his discussion conducted with the leaders of the BRICS member countries before the conference.

He said that the Prime Minister has played a significant role in promoting Ethiopia’s contribution in Africa and international diplomatic forums as well as its economic prospects. The adviser stated that this allowed Ethiopia’s request to be accepted.

Redwan explained that Ethiopia’s BRICS membership will enable the country to expand economic cooperation and investment options.

The adviser pointed out that strengthening of BRICS would create an opportunity for the world market to have an alternative to a single currency.

“This is an important role in improving the benefits of developing countries, including Ethiopia, by expanding development financing options.”

He pointed out that Ethiopia being a member of BRICS, which is growing economically and diplomatically, will expand its influence in the international arena too.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Birtukan Ayano, said in her part that through the strong diplomatic efforts carried out in the past, Ethiopia has been able to expand its influence in international forums.

“The acceptance of Ethiopia’s request to become a BRICS member is an indication of this.”

According to her, the diplomatic efforts carried out during the concluded fiscal year has helped the country increase its acceptance at the international fora by reversing the pressures it had experienced in the past citing the visits conducted by a number of heads of states and governments of several countries and head of international organizations as well as Foreign Affair Ministers to Ethiopia.

Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have also been accepted as a new member countries of BRICS.
