Minister Tedros, EU HR confer on migration, regional stability

Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom discussed today with High Representative (HR) of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini on issues of common interest.

The two sides have mainly discussed on migration, and peace and security as well, according to Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Towelde Mulugeta.

Since Ethiopia hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees from neighboring countries, the European Union is working in collaboration with the East African nation to assists its efforts in supporting the refugees.

Currently Ethiopia hosts more than 800,000 refugees from Eritrea, Somalia and South Sudan who fled civil war and prosecution.

The Government allocated land for the 23 camps around Assosa, Dollo Ado, Gambella, Jijiga, Semera and Shire and provides police presence at those locations.

During the discussion Dr Tedros has urged the EU and other stakeholders to increase its assistance since the number of refugees who cross the Ethiopian boarder has been increasing significantly, according to Tewolde.

Regarding peace and security, the two sides discussed the role Ethiopia has been playing in the region to ensure stability.

The relative stability of Somalia is among the achievements of the efforts exerted to ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region, Dr Tedros briefed the High Representative.

After the discussion, the High Representative told reporters that “Ethiopia should have to be praised for its efforts to solve the difficult and complicated challenges of the region”.

The HR said that they will continue to work together on peace and stability. “The lack of peace and stability in the horn of Africa could be dangerous even to Europe. We have discussed on this agenda and agreed to work together” she explained.

EU will step up its support for Ethiopia in economic development, job creation, capacity building and migration, Mogherini said.
