Meskel Holiday celebrated nationwide

Asmara, Meskel Holiday (Finding of the True Cross) was celebrated today, 28 September nationwide colorfully.

At the ceremony conducted at Bahti Meskerem Square in which senior Government and PFDJ officials, religious leaders, members of the Diplomatic Corps as well as thousands of the faithful took part, the Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Eritrean Tewahdo Orthodox Church, Abune Lucas and His Holiness Abune Petros, led prayers followed by religious hymns around the Damera torch.

At the occasion, Memhir Simon Beyene gave briefing on the historical background of the Meskel Holiday. Memhir Beyene also paid tribute to the martyrs that sacrificed their dear lives in the struggle for independence and safeguarding the national sovereignty.

Finally, the General Secretary of the Holy Synod, Abune Lucas and Abune Petros accompanied by other religious leaders and the Governor of the Central region, Maj. Gen. Romodan Aweliai lit the Damera torch.

Sunday school youths presented religious songs depicting the occasion.
