International Women’s Day colorfully celebrated nationwide

Asmara, Eight March, International Women’s Day was colorfully celebrated nationwide here in the capital under the theme “Peace Outcome of Our Perseverance – Development Product of Our Toil”.

At the ceremony observed in Expo Hall, Ms. Teke’a Tesfamicael, President of NUEW, Maj. Gen. Romodan Osman Awliyay, Governor of the Central region, ministers and other high ranking officials, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of international organizations attended.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Alem Belay, head of NUEW branch in the Central region, stating that this year’s International Women’s Day is celebrated at a time in which an era of “No War – No Peace” has closed and a new chapter of peaceful prospect is prevailing, said that this Day shoulders a heavy responsibility of national development and called on women to reinforce contribution.

Maj. Gen. Romodan Osman Awliyay on his part, pointing the role and contribution of the EPLF in the journey of the emancipation of women, expressed conviction that Eritrean women will strengthen their resilient commitment and participation in the new era of peace.

Ms. Susan Ngongi, UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator in Eritrea, stating the Eritrean struggle for the emancipation of women is an example to the world, expressed her belief that Eritrean women will continue their struggle in this new era equipped with novel principles.

The International Women’s Day featured cultural and artistic performances depicting the role of women. Various prizes were also handed over to high scoring female students in the 2016/2017 national eighth grade exam.

It is to be recalled that March 8 celebrations have been conducted in various parts of the country.
