Gov’t Commences Provision of Humanitarian Aid to People in Need of Critical Support : Commission

The National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) announced that the government has begun providing humanitarian aid to those who are in need of assistance in all areas of the country, including the Tigray region.

Transportation of food supply from eight centers, including the Adama Relief Coordination Center has begun to different affected areas of the country today.

NDRMC Logistics Operations Director, Tewodros Demsie told ENA that different humanitarian organizations have suspended humanitarian aid to the affected people in the past three months claiming that humanitarian aid was used for inappropriate purposes.

Accordingly, the government has begun providing humanitarian assistance to the people affected by man-made and natural disasters in different parts of the country.

The delivery of aid is being provided to the people who are in need of critical assistance in all 12 regions of the country, including the Tigray region, he noted.

Today, over 115,000 quintals of wheat, corn, flour and nutritious food items for mothers and children are being delivered to the affected communities, he stated.

Transportation of the humanitarian aid is being carried out from the centers of the commission including from the warehouse in Adama, Woreta, Shinile, Dire Dawa, and Wolayta Sodo to different parts of the country.

According to him, in addition to the direct support provided by the government, the public has also been extending aid to the people.

The director also said that the government and the commission are jointly investigating on the complaints raised by donor organizations about the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Disaster Risk Management Commission Adama Branch Manager, Wondosen Fikadu for his part said some 50 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid have today departed to various parts of the country.

Edible oil, wheat, maize, rice and other nutrient foods are among the humanitarian aid being transported to various parts of the country, he added.
