It is to be recalled that both leaders have worked towards reversing the no war, no peace state of affairs which had [reviously prevailed for 20 years and pledged to work together for lasting peace and mutual development co-operation.

In July, Abiy and the Eritrean President held extensive discussions on charting out strategies for restoration of diplomatic relations, peace and mutually beneficial economic co-operation between the two countries.

Among other things, their discussions focused on landlocked Ethiopia’s access to the ports of Assab and Massawa, restoring and strengthening diplomatic relations, exchange of air transport services and free movement of citizens between the two countries.

Coinciding with the visit, an Ethiopian merchant vessel, the MV Mekelle, on Wednesday docked at the Port of Massawa, the first Ethiopian ship to call at an Eritran port in 20 years, before sailing for China with 11,000 tons of export commodities from Eritrea.

Ethiopia, which has 90 per cent of its import-export trade handled through the port of Djibouti, is waiting for the re-opening of two roads connecting Ethiopia and the Eritrean ports to recommence using their services.
