Burkina Government Aims to Elevate Pharmaceutical Industry to Sovereignty

Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe government is actively working to transition the national pharmaceutical industry from its “embryonic stage” to a state of sovereignty, aiming to ensure the population has access to quality and affordable medicines. This initiative was highlighted by the Director General of Access to Medicines, Dr. Zacharia Yabre, during a speech on Saturday.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Dr. Yabre emphasized the need for significant progress in the pharmaceutical sector, which has been slow to develop. Speaking at the 25th anniversary gala of the Gamet laboratory, which produces both modern and traditional medicines from local medicinal plants, he shared the government’s vision to stimulate the industry. The Ministry of Health is actively supporting the laboratory to promote careers and inspire pharmacists and other stakeholders to contribute towards achieving pharmaceutical sovereignty in Burkina Faso.

Dr. Anicet Sawadogo, head of the Gamet laboratory, expressed gratitude to the government and the Ministry of Health for their continued support. He stressed the critical importance of sovereignty and outlined plans to continue investing in order to provide treatment for more Burkinabe and Africans. He also pledged to collaborate with authorities and stakeholders to further develop the national pharmaceutical production and enhance the health sector for the benefit of the population.

The gala event also included the presentation of a grant, certificates, and trophies to various personalities and partners. Special recognition was given to two late figures in Burkina Faso’s pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Jean-Marie Sawadogo, founder of the Gamet laboratory, and Dr. Zephirin Dakuyo, who were honored with trophies in recognition of their visionary contributions.
