OTJIWARONGO: Five people lost their lives in two separate accidents on the B1 national road in the Otjozondjupa Region, on Friday.

An incident report of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) on Friday indicated that four people died some 84 kilometres south of Otjiwarongo to Okahandja when the driver of a Toyota Legend 45 double cab collided head-on with a white Volkswagen polo hatchback while overtaking a truck.

“Three people including the driver of the polo, and a 70-year-old driver of the Toyota pick-up, a South African national, all died in the accident,” it said.

Other three occupants in both vehicles – two children in the polo and a 34-year-old in the pick up sustained injuries and were treated at a hospital in Okahandja.

The other accident happened at about 01h20, when an Iveco truck, travelling from the north with two occupants including the driver, side-collided with a white Ford Ranger travelling from the south of Otavi with five occupants including the driver. The driver of a Ford Ranger, in the process, lost control of the vehicle which left the road and overturned.

A 14-year-old boy, identified by his relatives as Isack Ndjamba succumbed to his injuries on the scene, it stated.

Six other occupants – the 39-year-old truck driver and his passenger aged 21, and the 45-year-old Ford Ranger driver, as well as his three passengers aged 10, 23, and 43 years all sustained slight to serious injuries and received medical attention at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital.

The accident happened approximately six kilometres south of Otavi and police investigations in both accidents continue.
