Ethiopia’s participation at the 78th UN General Assembly (UNGA78) has been very successful and created understanding about the interest of the country, said Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Meles Alem.
The UNGA78 is going on in New York under the theme: “Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all’.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonen has carried out effective bilateral and multilateral diplomacy with some 30 high level officials of various countries and heads of UN organizations both at the78th Sessions of United Nations General Assembly(UNGA78) and on the margins of the summit.
During the discussions, countries, international institutions and partners have got a good understanding of the Ethiopia, underpinning their development partnerships and cooperation, the spokesperson pointed out.
The spokesperson also said the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appreciated Ethiopia’s handling of refugees during the discussion he held with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonen.
The secretary general described Ethiopia as an important player in multilateral diplomacy, Meles said.
Ambassador Meles also said the desires shown by the international financial institutions to support Ethiopia is encouraging.
As a result, the 78th UN General Assembly has created a good opportunity to increase Ethiopia’s influence on the international diplomatic stage, he added.
In an informal meeting convened by Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany, Ethiopia has echoed the common position of African continent to get a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, according to the spokesperson.
In general, the bilateral and multilateral diplomatic activities Ethiopia has carried at UNGA78 has been successful as part of achieving the target set out by the ministry in the Fiscal year to increase its allies and diplomatic clout, he pointed out.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonon is expected to deliver a speech at the General Assembly today, explaining the position of Ethiopia and his government.
