COP27 Presidency, FAO Launched Food Initiative To Support Climate Vulnerable Communities

Egypt’s presidency of the ongoing UN climate conference, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), launched here yesterday, a food and agriculture initiative, to increase climate resources to support the most vulnerable communities.

In a statement, the presidency of the 27th session of the Conference of Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) said, the initiative, dubbed the Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation (FAST), will reimage agrifood systems, to deliver triple wins for people, climate action and nature.

The COP27 presidency said in the statement that, FAST’s action priorities are access to finance, knowledge and capacity, and policy support and dialogue.

“Through the FAST initiative, we will be mobilising the world to unlock finance flows, to increase climate resilience and implement urgently needed transformation across agrifood systems,” COP27 President, Sameh Shoukry, said.

Shoukry added, the impact of climate change is disproportionately impacting vulnerable communities around the world.

“To address this imbalance, we need to develop sustainable farming and food systems and meet the urgent needs of food-importing developing countries,” he added.

Meanwhile, FAO Deputy Director General, Maria Helena Semedo, said, bold actions are needed to transform agrifood system, support countries and ensure that resources reach food producers across the value chain.

COP27 kicked off on Nov 6, in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm El-Sheikh, with countries working together to address global climate change.

WHO is on the ground as climate-driven health emergency in the Greater Horn of Africa threatens 47 million lives

Climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity. It is estimated that environmental factors take the lives of around 13 million people every year. Global warming is influencing weather patterns, causing heat waves, heavy rainfall and droughts.

The Greater Horn of Africa is facing an unprecedented, acute hunger and health crisis driven by climate change, and compounded by conflict and economic shocks. Forty-seven million people in that region are now experiencing high levels of malnutrition or worse – up from 31 million – and more will go hungry as the drought affecting parts of the Region is expected to continue. Malnourished people become more easily sick, and sick people become more easily malnourished.

Climate change is also a major aggravating factor for infectious diseases like cholera and dengue fever. Disease outbreaks are surging in the Greater Horn of Africa, escalating the health emergency. The impact of outbreaks of infectious diseases during emergencies is multiplied, especially when combined with low vaccination coverage and poor access to health services.

WHO and partners are on the ground, ensuring access to basic health services, providing treatment for severe malnutrition, and helping countries detect, prevent and respond to disease outbreaks.
