Melissa Hammerle Appointed President of Intelex Technologies

She earned an MBA from Harvard University and an BA in Economics from Dartmouth College.

LONGi issues its first White Paper on Climate Action at COP26 summit

In 2020, LONGi joined the RE100, EV100 and EP100 in succession, becoming the first Chinese company to join all three initiatives of the Climate Group at the same time. LONGi also joined the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) in the same year in response to a CDP climate change questionnaire, which opened the way for the company’s involvement in Climate Action.

According to its white paper, LONGi is actively fulfilling its commitments and promoting the implementation of the four international initiatives. The company has completed the accounting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain for the first time, with the proportion of renewable electricity used in 2020 reaching 41.83%, the equivalent of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.35 million tons.

LONGi’s five manufacturing plants in Yunnan Province have in the meantime achieved 100% use of renewable electricity. In accordance with SBTi standards, the company has also submitted its own emission reduction targets for the first time – based on 2020 figures, greenhouse gas emissions within the scope of operation in 2030 will be reduced by 60% and carbon emission intensity per ton of silicon material, per watt of cell and per ton of glass will be reduced by 20%.

The COP26 summit is the first meeting of the parties since the Paris agreement entered the implementation stage.

Glasgow is the third consecutive COP at which LONGi has participated. Synchronoss Personal Cloud Solution Selected by Telkomsel to Bolster Digital Services Offering

New partnership will allow Indonesian mobile operator to bring personal cloud services to a market of more than 170 million subscribers

The addition of the Synchronoss Personal Cloud solution will give Telkomsel’s subscribers the ability to back up and manage their valuable digital content, including photos and videos, from any device.

The white-label Synchronoss Personal Cloud solution—branded “Floudrive” and managed by Telkomsigma—will be made available to Telkomsel’s 170 million subscribers as a premium feature. Subscribers will be able to choose between two different storage tiers and enjoy an initial free 30-day period. The solution gives subscribers a reliable and intuitive cloud storage experience, with the ability to backup and sync digital content, while also introducing advanced tagging and search capabilities.

Nigeria Rescues Six People Abducted from Abuja University

Nigerian security agents have rescued six people abducted by armed men from a university in Abuja this week, in what was a rare kidnapping at a higher education institution in the country’s capital, police said on Friday.

Gunmen abducted four members of staff and two of their children from the University of Abuja on Tuesday, which has led to increased military checkpoints in and around the city and stop and search operations by police.

Gangs of armed men, known locally as bandits, have since late last year carried out a series of abductions from schools and deadly attacks on villages, mostly in the northwest of the country, in return for ransom.

Abuja and the surrounding area, which have better roads and infrastructure than most of Nigeria, are usually considered among the safest parts of the country.

Abuja police spokeswoman Josephine Adeh Anipr said all those abducted were “reunited with their families through a joint operation with other security agencies.”

The university also confirmed the six had regained freedom.

Increasing lawlessness in the north and northwest and a 12-year-old Islamist insurgency in the northeast have stretched Nigeria’s security forces and heightened security fears in Africa’s most populous country.

Niger Says 11 Soldiers Killed, Nine Missing After Attack

Eleven soldiers were killed and nine reported missing on Friday following a jihadi attack on an army position in Dagne in western Niger, days after 69 civilians died in an ambush, the government said.

The attack by “a column of heavily armed terrorists in several vehicles and dozens of motorcycles” killed 11 soldiers, and left one injured, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense read on public television.

“After fierce fighting, the enemy column was forced to retreat with its dead and wounded,” added the statement, which said “air and ground reinforcements dispatched to the area continue to sweep” the locality.

The soldiers targeted had been deployed to ensure the safety of the thousands of villagers who had returned to their communities after the earlier killings.

At least 69 people, including a local mayor, died earlier this week in an attack in the country’s volatile tri-border zone with Burkina Faso and Mali.

The assault took place on Tuesday at Adab-Dab, a village about 55 kilometers (32 miles) from Banibangou in the western region of Tillaberi, but was only confirmed by the government on Thursday.

The government declared two days of national morning starting Friday.

Local sources said a motorcycle-borne defense force was attacked by “heavily armed members of the ISGS (Islamic State in the Greater Sahara),” who were also on motorbikes.

Another source said the target of the attack on Tuesday was a local anti-jihadi defense force called the Vigilance Committees, which was headed by the mayor of Banibangou district.

The defense force had recently been set up by local people following a string of attacks on farm workers in remote fields by highly mobile jihadists, a former mayor said.

The world’s poorest country by the benchmark of the U.N.’s Human Development Index (HDI), Niger is facing jihadist insurgencies on its western border with Mali and Burkina Faso and on its southeastern frontier with Nigeria.

The western insurgency began with incursions in 2015. The bloodshed escalated in 2017, with massacres carried out by groups affiliated to al-Qaida and Islamic State.

Human Rights Watch estimated in August that more than 420 civilians had been killed since the start of the year in western Niger.

Working towards transforming the agri-food systems in Eastern Africa

Commending FAO Eastern Africa for making significant progress in implementing its planned activities, high-level representatives from the member states and partner institutions underscored the need for a more robust and coordinated response to reverse the evolving food insecurity and malnutrition in the sub region.

This was conveyed at the 15th Annual Multidisciplinary Team Meeting of the FAO Sub regional Office for Eastern Africa (SFE), convened to review the implementation of the Office’s Priority Framework (2019-2023) and FAO’s corporate initiatives in the sub region.

Participants underlined that, despite COVID-19 pandemic and multiple crises, SFE has shown a great deal of determination to support member states and key institutions in their effort to ensure that the agriculture sector continues to support the livelihoods of millions of households in the sub region. Nonetheless, they asserted that the existing food insecurity and nutrition challenge requires bold and transformative actions to shift the sub region on to a sustainable and resilient path.

Opening the Meeting, David Phiri, FAO Sub regional Coordinator for Eastern Africa and Representative to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), observed that Eastern Africa has continued to experience various crises and shocks, including ever-present conflicts and more frequent droughts and floods further aggravating the already fragile agri-food systems.

Phiri noted that staff members in the FAO country offices and at SFE have demonstrated a great deal of tenacity in adopting and embracing the new realities, and have continued to respond to the needs of member countries, partners and the communities that FAO was serving.

“Building community and household resilience and preserving access to safe and nutritious food have been and will continue to be, an essential part of our joint efforts,” he stressed.

Representing high level Government representative at the opening of the Meeting, Arefaine Berhe, Minister for Agriculture of Eritrea, shared the best practices that Eritrea has demonstrated through its national programme, “The Minimum Integrated Household Agricultural Package (MIHAP).” Minister Berhe said the programme has promoted grassroots agro-development activities to improve the living conditions of the farming communities. Now, he recalled, communities has begun to meet their food and nutrition requirements, as well as income from sale of surplus products, while protecting the environment. Thanking FAO for its new Strategic Framework based on four Betters (better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment and Better Life), the Minister highlighted that the Government of Eritrea has already adopted the four Betters in its work in agriculture. He shared a short video, which depicted how the transformation to more inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems was being realised in Eritrea.

Conference to combat Climate Change

Conference to mark the 26th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that is currently underway in Glasgow, the UK, was conducted today, 05 November in Asmara.

In his keynote address, Mr. Tesfay Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, said that while marking the prominence and the hope that the world attaches to the negotiation process of the Conference, it will be appropriate on the part of Eritrea to reflect not only on expectations from its deliberations, but also indicate what is that Eritrea has been doing and will have to continue doing to contribute to the success of the ultimate objectives and familiarize the youth in different government institutions the motive behind convening the Conference of Parties 26.

Minister Tesfay went on to say that even though Eritrea’s contribution to the worrisome global emission is negligible, as a country hit hard by the impact of climate change, adaptation has been priority strategy during the last three decades. He also said that Eritrea has been mobilizing communities in implementing integrated programs aimed at restoring degraded land, soil and water conservation, and rehabilitation of the ecosystem and that the achievements made are encouraging.

Ms. Amakobe Sande, UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea, on her part said that unless drastic measures are taken to address the temperature that reaching new highs and biodiversity reaching new low, warming of oceans, acidifying and choking with plastic waste as well as to the uneven rain distribution, unprecedented flooding and droughts will make vast stretches of the planet dead zones for humanity.

At the Conference timely research papers were presented and the participants conducted extensive discussion and adopted various recommendations.
